What to Expect

B2 First qualification shows that you can deal confidently with different types of texts; such as fiction, newspapers and magazines as well as shows how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary.

It also shows that you are able to produce different pieces of writing; such as letters, reports, reviews and essays.

Finally, it shows you are able to follow and understand a range of spoken materials; such as news programmes, presentations and everyday conversations in addition to the ability to communicate effectively in face to face situations.

B2 First is aimed at learners who need to show they can:

  • start working in an English – speaking environment
  • study at an upper-intermediate level, such as foundation or pathway courses
  • live independently in an English-speaking country

Exam and Professional Certification

B2 First certificate is recognised around the world as proof of upper - intermediate level English skill for industrial, administrative, service-based employment and accepted by a wide range of educational institutions for study purposes. Achieving a certificate at this level proves that a candidate is becoming skilled in English and now has practical language skills for everyday written and spoken situations. This exam can be taken as either a paper-based or computer based exam.

  1. What is B2 First?

    B2 First is a qualification for learners who have an upper-intermediate level of English.

    The exam:

    • Tests your knowledge and ability in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
    • Is accepted by thousands of institutions and employers around the world as evidence that you can use spoken and written English for study, work and life.
    • Is based on extensive research to make sure that each paper is the right length and the right level, so your exam result will reflect your abilities fairly and accurately.
    • Is designed to show your ability to use English in a range of different ways.
    • Can be taken on paper or on a computer.
  2. How can I prepare for the exam?

    A successful and enjoyable journey begins with good preparation course. For B2 First, you should:

    • Practise your English in all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
    • Improve your grammar and vocabulary for communication at B2 level.
    • Understand how the exam is organised and assessed.
    • Understand what will happen on exam day.
  3. What can I achieve after the exam?

    Well done! You prepared, you took the exam and now you’re just waiting for your results. So what happens now? All candidates receive a Statement of Results. If you are successful in the exam, you will also receive a certificate.

  4. What does my score means?

    Your overall score uses the Cambridge English Scale to show how well you did in the exam.

    • If you score 180 or more (grade A), you will receive a certificate for B2 First and your certificate will show that you demonstrated ability at CEFR Level C1.
    • If you score 160–179 (grade B or C), you will receive a certificate for B2 First and your certificate will show that you demonstrated ability at CEFR Level B2.
    • If you score 140–159, you will receive a certificate from Cambridge English and your certificate will show that you demonstrated ability at CEFR Level B1.
  5. What is my next step after B2 First?

    After you’ve passed B2 First, you can begin a course of higher education because Cambridge English Qualifications are officially accepted by thousands of colleges and universities globally.

    You may travel, study or work abroad because Cambridge English Qualifications are so well known all around the world, they can give you opportunities in other countries.

    You may prepare for the next level: C1 Advanced, because C1 Advanced qualification will help you develop the skills for studying, working or living in English-speaking countries.

Denis Saw

Denis has over 16 years of teaching experience in the English Language Teaching (ELT) industry and has taught in various countries including Ireland and Poland.

Denis is CELTA and DELTA qualified and offers training in CLIL and KAL. He is currently an ELT Trainer with an MA in English Studies focusing on materials development and learners autonomy.
